We all thought that it was because of Yui, right?
Or perhaps, Kozo found out that Gendou had some talent in him that he could utilize.
But what we didn't know (since anime episodes don't really show character thoughts in subtitles :x) is that Kozo...had his OWN agenda. And when he got Gendou out of Jail, THAT's when it all started.
