An old friend of Solid Snake, ex-Green Beret and Delta Force, exceptional tactical planning skills, offers advice and direction throughout mission.

Roy Campbell was born in the late 1940’s to American parents, but little else is known about this ex-Green Beret and Delta Force member’s personal life besides the fact that he is married, though his spouse’s name is [CLASSIFIED]. Campbell was the second person to take command of Special Forces Unit Fox-Hound (the first being Big Boss) in it’s infamous career in subliminally changing the world political scene with it’s militaristic view that was both harsh and necessary.

Before Campbell was an insider in the espionage field and at the helm of Fox-Hound, Campbell served in the Marine Corps, Green Beret, and Delta Force with great honors. He was known for his cool exterior and solid decision-making under pressure. Campbell’s extensive strategic knowledge is without question and has proved to see through rather successfully many tight situations in which he had his hand in. His name is one to be revered on the battlefield, for there are very few military commanders worldwide that can match Campbell’s precision, timing, and tactical execution skills. Known to both friend and foe alike as a passive fighter who uses brute force and violence only when absolutely necessary, his respect comes from both sides for being able to stop a skirmish using minimal or no violence. In past operations, the opposition simply knowing they would be going up against the mastery of Colonel Roy Campbell, have stepped down and surrendered without a fight rather then face the cunning wrath of Campbell. Commandeering a strong prescence, his knowledge and foresight into tactical matters has brought him to the head of his field in which he is a master in. Aside from his military prowess, Campbell embodies everything essential to a good teacher: charisma, insight, technique, thoroughness and the not-so-fake illusion of a good friend. Being all these, it is no wonder the operative code-named Solid Snake who befriends few considers Roy Campbell his only friend.

Once aboard unit Fox-Hound, he was assigned to the strategic planning of “escape and evade” missions, simply because of his talents and experience. After the demise of Fox-Hound’s first Supreme Commander, Big Boss, Campbell took the reigns to lead Fox-Hound into a new age of military ingenuity. One of the first changes he made to the unit was to discard the old code name system and instead concentrated on building up the “new” Fox-Hound’s technological capacity. This included instructing operatives on the specifications and use of various pieces of hi-tech equipment, such as reconaissance satellites.

After his appointed changes to unit Fox-Hound were made, Campbell was still unsatisfied and became irritated with the direction Fox-Hound was taking. Fox-Hound operatives were now being genetically treated and enhanced through a new procedure called “Gene Therapy” in which a soldier’s genes were manipulated to bring out the influence of certain “Soldier Genes” stored in a person’s DNA to increase natural human combat abilities exponentially. Campbell grew disgusted with what he called “Artificial Soldiers” because of his belief in core-values and actual combat experience, which, in his opinion, could not be duplicated using Gene Therapy techniques. Campbell stepped down from his Commander post shortly after the Zanzibar Land Riots of 1999. After his discharge, the commanderless Fox-Hound returned to using the discarded code name system of operative recognition and became increasingly distant from government control, shortly before a renegade splinter group was formed. Meanwhile, Campbell served as a special strategic instructor at a Marines’ boot camp. At this time, he struck up a friendship with another veteran, Master Miller [See CHARACTER PROFILE: Miller, Master].

After the Zanzibar Land Riots, several years passed in which Roy Campbell had very little to do with the government. That changed with the coming of the Shadow Moses Island Revolt. Campbell, blackmailed by the United States government by using his niece Meryl Silverburgh as bait to goad him into action, was appointed as head of the operation to put down the revolt in Alaska, though not officially. Being retired from active service, Campbell was used as a government puppet complete with proper colonel’s attire to convince former operative Solid Snake into accepting this new mission. However, Solid Snake’s whereabouts were a mystery to anyone but Campbell; even more reason for the government to use him. Campbell stationed operational control headquarters aboard an Ohio-class submarine off the coast of the Fox Archipelago in the frozen Bering Strait for his last mission (hopefully) along with the rest of the submarine headquarters crew. Forced to lie to Solid Snake about his background knowledge about the affair during the operation in order to save his niece, Campbell’s friendship with Solid Snake was jeopardized. Only when the truth was revealed about the government’s plan to blackmail him using his niece did Solid Snake forgive him and complete the mission.
Ret. Colonel Roy Campbell’s whereabouts are currently unknown, though it is assumed he is residing with spouse and family.
